5 Reasons to Start a Trident Realm Army

17th Apr 2024

Dan Mapleston

It's time to listen to the call of the ocean, and dive into one of the most unique and diverse factions in fantasy wargaming!

Now available and shipping (pun intended), the Trident Realm's gorgeous new miniature kits and hard plastics have arrived. If you're still on the fence, here's FIVE top reasons to make them your next hobby project...

ONE: A Painter's Dream

If you've ever had 'painter's block' before when bringing a project to life (traditionally occurring somewhere around the 63rd goblin), then the Trident Realm will be a breath of fresh air.

Between the smooth amphibian skin of the Riverguard, the pearlescent armour of the Naiads, the vibrant hues of the Thuul, and the menacing dark tones of deep-sea monsters, this is a fantasy army that always has something new and visually fresh to work on.

The huge mix of allied species that make up Neritica's military means will keep you inspired and excited throughout your hobby journey!

TWO: Full Theme Ahead

On the other hand...this is a list where you could instead really lean into a particular themed element of the army - especially when playing Ambush games. It's perfectly possible to theme a small force around a core of Riverguard, the Naiads, the Thuul, or even Water Elementals!

Thuul Troop

They may not be as well-rounded as when they all fight together, but a list built strongly around a fun theme can act as the starting point for some of the best narrative battles!

THREE: Beyond Good & Evil

Too often in fantasy gaming a list of factions are simply carved up into camps of 'goodies' and 'baddies'. Well, Pannithor isn't so simple, and some factions fall into the grey area between these polar opposites...

While Ogre mercenaries are motivated by coin and the Forces of Nature seek to maintain the balance of the world, the Trident Realm are driven chiefly to defend their underwater city-states and the wider waters they inhabit - whatever that takes. This gives you lots of scope to build cool narratives for your battle.

Maybe your forces are (i) fighting for control of a stretch of coastline that borders their territory, (ii) raiding a settlement whose fishing fleet have turned their harpoons and nets on the water-wyrms, (iii) taking the fight inland after reports of a great dam being constructed across a watercourse of great significance to the local Riverguard...

Trident Realms

So get your imagination going, and put some inspiration behind your upcoming battles - it's time to tell the story of YOUR Trident Realm army.

FOUR: 20,000 Deeds Under The Sea

There's a lot going on deep down in the oceans of Pannithor, away from the prying eyes of land-dwellers!

Trident Realm Knucker

This is what you're signing up for when you choose to collect a Trident Realm army - mystery, wonder, and the chance to show what happens when your opponent messes with a whole ocean's worth of militarised fish-folk.

Most importantly, you're gaining the opportunity to bellow 'UNLEASH THE KRAKEN' across a gaming table at your friends...and we all need a bit more of that to brighten our day!

FIVE: The Way of Water

The Trident Realm is a faction with real depth, and rewards players that dive into how different units in the army list interact.

On the tabletop, this means that the force really feels like an alliance that works together to take on the enemy, with special rules that bring the theme and flavour to life. Let's look at a couple of really characterful examples...there's lots more to discover, but we won't spoil all the fun!

1) How about using the Leviathan's Bane harpoon rule to pull opposing units out of cover, allowing the Riverguard Arbalest and Treeleaper Dambusters to then take advantage and open fire?

2) Lots of core infantry choices have Ensnare as the enemy is assaulted by tentacles, nets, and more! Because enemy units taking them on in front-facing melee engagements have -1 to hit, they will 'stick' to your units for longer. Set things up right, and you'll be able to use Riverguard elements with the Leaper rule to then jump into their flank....frogtastic!

So, if you've enjoyed our little tour through all the brilliant reasons to start collecting Trident Realm - your best place to start is with either the Ambush, Army or Mega Army Set.

You'll find them all, and a bunch of other brilliant miniature kits below!

Trident Realm Ambush Starter Set

The Trident Realm Ambush starter set is the perfect way to begin your Kings of War adventure.

Deep beneath the seas of the known world lies the Trident Realm – a triumvirate of glittering underwater kingdoms, ruled by an aquatic race far beyond the ken of land-dwellers. Created during the God War by the Dark Smith, the Neriticans are as capricious as the waterways they inhabit, in parts gentle and nurturing, in others spiteful and full of wrath.

Trident Realm Army

As with many races, the fishmen’s influence on the world since has ebbed and flowed. They are fiercely territorial and have clashed and sided with many land-dwelling peoples, especially when their watery domain is encroached upon by the vile, filthy cities that are built on coasts and rivers. Their relative isolation and remoteness has given them a certain aloofness to the general woes and conflicts of the other races, but when their anger is roused, few can stand in the way of the hordes that pour forth from the ocean waters. They still feel the call in their hearts to protect the Mother world from the darkness from which they were rescued and this more than anything is what drives them to arms and to venture onto the land.

Trident Realm Mega Army

Most Neriticans have lungs as well as gills and can march as well as any man. Eventually, however, they do have to return to their aquatic homes, and so Neriticans rarely have any interest in holding objectives or fortifying positions. They attack swiftly and decisively, sacking any settlement or stronghold that they see as a threat, before retreating back whence they came.

When the winds of war blow strong and sweep across the land, they stir the waters of the world and nervous eyes keep watch of the rising tide. Who knows what will emerge from the depths?

Trident Realm Riverguard

The Trident Realm Riverguard are not true Neriticans at all. Dwelling near inland waters, these amphibious creatures belong to tribes that long ago allied themselves to the Neriticans for mutual benefit. They are rangy creatures, looking something like frogs, and perhaps are more akin to the beastmen of the Herd than fishmen.

Fighting in small skirmishing groups known as ‘clutches’, these lithe warriors favour javelins as their weapons, attacking their foes at range before disengaging and retreating back into cover. Treeleaper clutches prefer to strike the enemy in close combat with heavy two-handed tridents, literally leaping onto enemy warriors to deal a final, heavy blow.

Trident Realm Riverguard Dambusters

Due to sacred oaths older than most civilisations, the Trident Realm Riverguard Dambusters are the first defence for the Trident Realm, serving as sentinels, and carefully watching for danger passing through rivers and estuaries. In battle, they move in great, bounding leaps, crashing into the midst of the enemy before attacking with their poisoned weapons.

When the rivers under the protection of the Trident Realm are encroached upon by humans, dwarfs or elves, the Riverguard deploy their heavy cavalry – the Dambusters. These giant amphibians are tremendously strong, able to leap over dam walls and lay waste to these constructions and their defenders with ease. It takes fast reflexes and intuition to fight atop these mounts, so only the elite of the Riverguard can be found in Dambuster clutches.
