Armada – Staff And Community Showcase
3rd May 2023
Jonny Mann
Hey folks,
In today's blog we take a look at how some staff members are getting on creating new and wonderful Armada fleets along with some of the best content from the Armada community recently!
Dan
Dan has been busy working away on two fleets of late, his Dwarfs and a new Ghost fleet!
"Being quite new to Armada, I built and painted a Dwarf fleet first as they are a really easy one to get started with! I went with a classic colour palette of steel, red, bronze and brass - very similar to the studio scheme. Once I'd realised that resin miniatures are much easier to work with than I'd expected, I decided to do something more ambitious..."
"With rules for ghost ships about to enter Armada, I settled on the Twilight Kin vessels as the most visually scary and otherworldly fleet in the game. I may have added some claws to the bigger ships for extra weirdness...
For a simple paint scheme, I went with a black undercoat, drybrushed with dark blue, then pale green, then white. Finally, a red wash on the fleshy details. And to do something different to Martin's awesome ghost fleet I decided to have them floating above the water rather than in it! Each boat is mounted on a flat support wrapped in mirrored tape - which works really well when viewed from a high angle. Cotton wool beneath the hull disguises the ship's flat underside and adds a final touch of spookiness!"
Martin
No stranger to Armada, having already painted up a great set of converted Nightstalker ships (check out the Blog on how he did the bases HERE), Martin has been busy painting up Ghosts and Pirates ready for the new Seas Of Dread book.
"When Matt asked me to support the studio with some painting for the new Armada book, I jumped at the chance. He asked me to paint not just one, but two fleets for Seas of Dread. The ghost fleet and the pirates. The brief was to take a mixture of ships and throw them together in two different painting schemes.
Painting the ghosts ships is really straightforward and only needs 3 or 4 different paints and a couple of brushes (you can use an airbrush if you are that way inclined). Using a drybrush technique is the biggest part of the technique. If you want to see how I painted the ghost fleet you can watch the YouTube video below."
"The Pirates were a different challenge. I wanted to use a theme that would work across the different fleet styles. So I went with black sails and a skull transfer. Where there was a prominent icon on a sail (such as for the Basileans and the Orcs) I tried to show the disdain the pirates have for everything by scrawling red paint over it in a giant cross! The fleet was done using speed/contrast paints for hulls as that paint works perfectly. Once the metal sections were done I used some Verdigris and Rust effects paints I have to simulate the weathering. A really fun couple of projects and I can't wait to see what the community comes up with!"
Talking of the community, let's take a look at what some of you have been painting recently...
James Wapple
Watch how he painted these incredible Trident Realm miniatures on his Twitch HERE. James is a master at working with oil paints and has painted some stunning Mantic miniatures.
Maciej Kulesza
Maciej always blows us away with his Armada work and these Elves complete with trees growing on them are no exception.
Thanks guys, we can't wait to see what the community can do with the new Ghost and Pirate rules, not to mention all of the new scenery and plenty more on the horizon!
