Hello Martin here!
It's been a while since Rob let me loose on a blog but he’s on holiday today, so I’ll grab my chance to get a sneaky one in!
With Clash of Kings fast approaching and always being on the look out for a new project, I thought I would pick up some Halflings and try and paint a new army in time for October. I recently played in the doubles tournament with Matt Hobday and his Halfling army looked a lot of fun to play with. I am the spare player again at Clash (easy win for any opponent I’m sure) and as always I’ll try my best to have something pretty on the table.
Style over substance, that’s my motto!
Before I go all in on an army I usually like to pick out a few miniatures to paint and get a feel for them and also start to develop a theme for how I’m going to multi-base the army. Plus I love painting big monster/titan type things too!
So, first up…. a big dragon!
I know we have a fantastic miniature for the Muster Captain on Winged Aralez but I wanted to make my own version too.
As you can see this is slightly bigger than the official miniature. I have used the brand new dragon from our Terrain Crate range (releasing later this year) plus one of the cavalry riders from the sprue. I also have a reputation for painting a lot of red and green, so I wanted to try some new colours. So plenty of blue for the creatures and an army ‘theme’ of Purple/Pink and black. I recently got some new AK Interactive and some Pro Acryl paints. They are very vibrant with great coverage so I’m a bit of a convert from some of the paints I was currently using. The 039 Bright Yellow Green Pro Acryl is a particular new favourite!
After the Dragon I picked up the Halfling heroes and painted a couple of those models. At this point a theme is starting to form in my head… as a fan of using pigments, I thought I would start to create a dusty rubble base theme. I used some pieces from the Terrain Crate set to create the base for the Hero Ally McSween.
Next up was the Greedy Guts model. I went for a pallid sickly looking flesh tone for this guy. I’ve also started to add blood effects on the miniatures. I wanted to make this ‘neutral’ army lean more towards the evil side. When I say ‘lean towards’ I’m thinking they may as well just be fully fledged cannibals.. why not?
The final miniature I painted ahead of the blog was the big old Iron Beast! Another PVC model which was an absolute pleasure to paint. I picked up a couple of sheets of skull transfers from The Mighty Brush website. Adding this insignia to the armour of the beast helped develop a bit more theme and character and pushed the evil angle a bit more. Also I’m planning on using the skulls on the shields of the infantry. Hopefully that will look quite cool!
I’ve been trying to improve my True Metallic Metal painting. From a black primer base I slowly build up the metallic using a stippling technique. I have been using the Scale Color Metal n’ Alchemy set for a while and I start with Black Metal and layering highlights through to Thrash Metal then Heavy Metal.
The final highlight is the very bright Speed Metal. Use this one very sparingly if you get hold of this set. You only need a little to make the highlights pop.
So that’s it for part one of my new army journey to Clash of Kings.
Next up will probably be some of the amazing resin kits in the Halfling army range. I'm definitely not putting off painting the infantry. Definitely not!
So keep an eye out for more from me in the future!
