On the 2nd Day of Xmas: Terrain Crate
26th Dec 2023
Matt Gilbert
Hi everyone,
We started in the dungeon. Then we travelled forward to the modern and post-apocalyptic eras. So what were we going to do next with the Terrain Crate range?
Terrain Crate is all about set dressing: those details that make your boards spring to life and giving everyone that sees them a real 'wow moment'. Great scenery makes your games immersive, and Terrain Crate really enhances your gaming experience with quick-to-table elements for every possible situation.
The first two Terrain Crate projects were all about the zoomed-in feeling. Furniture for rooms and corridors, scatter for blasted houses and warehouses, campsites for when your party is ambushed in the dead of night, and more!
So this time, it seemed natural to zoom out and tackle larger games and battlefields. We started off with ruins that we knew could be used in lots of different game systems - not just our own!
Of course, Mantic being Mantic we didn’t just stop there. We looked at the table as a whole, and really leant into the sci-fi aspect of wargaming – adding scatter terrain, alien technology pieces, terrain templates and 3D craters.
Now, in every project - there's always something that turns out to be 'the big challenge'. Ronnie said early on was that almost every wargame gets played in an environment with nice green trees and looks like the Cotswolds! Nothing wrong with the Cotswolds of course, but they're not exactly...sci-fi.
So the answer was…alien trees! Easy, right?
Apparently not! We went through a lot of different ideas and designs to bring these to life. Our terrain sculptor Ben probably felt like we were barking up the wrong tree on many occasions. However, it was all worth it, and we think the final result is really rather special...
We have created a system of modular sections (complete with pre-drilled magnet holes) so players can create an endless variety of weird and exotic flora for their battlefields and RPGs, mixing both “jungle” and “fungal” themes.
Now there's no excuse for boring green forests on any sci-fi gaming table – and the trees also work brilliantly for fantasy games.
Alongside our existing range of modular hard plastic sci-fi buildings, these new sets really fleshed out the sci-fi offering to gives us a comprehensive, 1-stop shop for kitting out your gaming table and making it look amazing. And let's face it, who doesn't want to play some cool narrative scenarios across a table like this?
So if you haven't already, take a look HERE and have some fun dreaming up the table your army deserves!
See you all in 2024,
Matt
